Experts from the OSCE Office for Democratic Institutions and Human Rights Needs Assessment Mission arrived in Uzbekistan with the purpose to assess the pre-election environment for the upcoming October 2021 Presidential elections in our country, including preparation for the elections.
Upon Shavkat Mirziyoyev's election as President of Uzbekistan in 2016, the role of a robust civil society became the cornerstone of development for a new period in the country's history.
In Uzbekistan, systematic work is being carried out to fulfill international obligations to strengthen the legislative and institutional framework for the protection of human rights, to implement international human rights standards in national legislation and to intensify cooperation with international organizations on the protection of human rights.
A commentator once remarked that “everything is geopolitical in Central Asia.” Granting that this is true, we should further add that any talk about geopolitics cannot be without references to geoeconomics, especially when it comes to recent developments taking place in the heart of Central Asia, as exemplified in – and to some extent a result of – the foreign policy of Uzbekistan of the last five years or so.
